Approvals
Aspartame was first approved in Europe for table-top sweeteners in France in 1979. In the 1980s, approvals followed in many other countries, and the legislation was brought together in a European Sweetener Directive in 1994.

The European Commission bases its legislative proposals on the advice which it receives from the Scientific Committee on Food (SCF). The latest review of aspartame by the SCF was in December 2002. Details of the SCF review are available here.
